From Steve Stoliar:
ReplyDelete"I knew his obit would say "best-known for the Batman films" just as when Agnes Moorehead died, I knew they'd say "best-known for Bewitched." And I guess they're right in both cases. Never mind that Agnes did "Citizen Kane" and "Mag. Ambersons." When she died, she was, in fact, "best known" as Endora to millions of TV viewers. So never mind "Richard III," "Dracula," "Dr. Who," "Horrors of the Black Museum," "Konga," "Savage Messiah," "Boys From Brazil," "The Dresser," etc. For "most" filmgoers, he's best known as Alfred. I guess part of the trick is dying at the right time in your career. Otherwise, like Alec Guinness, your obit spotlights "Star Wars."
In 1957 Michael Gough won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor.
ReplyDeleteIn 1972 he was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for Best Supporting Actor; The Go-Between (1970).
